Rogue Antivirus – Don’t Fall for it!

January 26th, 2010

I make more money removing rogue antivirus programs than any other part of my business here at Just Works.

Do keep in mind that this is not *A* virus, but rather an entire *CLASS* of viruses and malware.  Almost all of them are VERY dangerous, as the person who wrote the malware has TOTAL CONTROL of your computer.  And this person isn’t some random programmer, but a criminal.  If you think you might have been infected, please call Brian at

Today, I saw an attempt to infect me, so I too screenshots to show everyone.  First, this window comes up:

Now, this was obviously a scam to me, but I decided to follow through and see what happened.  I clicked “OK”.

Next, I saw what looked like a brief antivirus scan… of a computer running Microsoft Windows.  This was humorous to me as I was on a Linux system at the time….  After a few moments, I got a second pop-up:

Oh, my!  Well, at this point it is so obvious to me, as it failed to guess that I was running Linux, then presented me with this message with typos.  I clicked OK again just to see what would happen.

The next window showed what looked kind of like some scan on Windows XP which detected a virus… then opened a “Save” dialog to download and install a “Setup” program.  Here’s what it looked like:

Again, this would be obvious to me as I am not using Windows.  Many, many, many people fall for this every day.  It is perhaps the most successful scam I’ve ever seen.

If you have fallen for it, you need to contact a professional.  One such is Brian over at Just Works in Nashua, NH.  Call 603-484-1461 to make an appointment for virus removal today!
